Lead | ||
|
Per both the JS and the WSJ, Greg Jennings has signed a multi-year extension that will make him one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL.
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/48933802.html Great, great news. Mark Tauscher, MVP of the World.

Great news, if not predictable and inevitable. Didn't we have someone around here who kept insisting Jennings wasn't going to stick around?

This makes me feel much better in light of the #4 news. Way to go Pack in taking care of him, and I can't wait to watch Jennings continue to develop into
an elite receiver.

He's not far from elite status right now. Just a few small improvements and he's there. It's so nice to see him signed. He's a great player
and a good role model off the field. He's the type of young player we need to keep around.

It's nice to see they don't just plan to cycle through receivers. Normally I wouldn't really care about that, but Jennings is something special, so
this is great to see.

Terms are still undisclosed but Bedard is reporting it's about $8M/yr through 2012, with most of the cap hit occurring this year.

Then we would just have to break his hand. Some great quotes from Jennings in that article. Well done by his agent, and well done by the Packers to stick a lot of the cap hit into this year when there's still a lot of cap room.

Well done by all involved. This is the way it should work out. Players who have made good contributions for a period of time get paid what they are worth. That
it is done in such a way as to pay the player yet keep the future economic outlook bright only adds to how good this deal is for both sides. I think Nick
Collins should pay attention to see how it should be done.

Same person who keeps insisting Favre wouldn't play for the Vikings, I think. Mark Tauscher, MVP of the World. |

I guess Collins should learn to keep his mouth shut when the team refuses to negotiate with him. If I was Collins I would wonder why they refuse to negotiate with me and how to change that. Had he actually played to the level of Jennings he would have been as high a priory as Jennings. I think what Collins is missing is his culpability in why the Packers have been slower to address his desires than they were Jennings. I get what you mean though. He may need to make more noise since he is where he is and nothing is going to change that. What I don't get is how he thinks missing this particular off season's stuff is going to make him a better player. Had he just been a better player for a longer period of time he wouldn't be in the situation he is now. I just looks to me like he hasn't learned his play for two of the three years so far is why is is a lower priority or that he needs to do everything he can to change that. If the Packer chose to play hardball his missing the time he already has is going to effect how quickly he adapts to the new system. If he missed some of training camp he will be even further behind. If that happens and he plays like he missed a lot of the implementation of a new system he will loose a lot more money by his own doing. |

This looks like it's a 4 year deal going through 2012. The length seems a bit short, but considering he'll be 29 when it expires, I like it. The team
should be better off gauging of whether or not he's still worth that type of money at the end of the deal rather than speculating right now. Doling out
money to skill position players into their 30s is risky business, so the more accurate your assessment the better.

I think the biggest reason the Packers haven't addressed Collins yet is because they still don't know how well he will fit into the new defensive
scheme. I am sure some of the responsibilities are similar but some are different. Him missing some of the OTA's I am sure has put him behind. I actually
applaud the Packers if this is there reasoning. They brought in Smith, who has experience in the 3-4, and who's to say that Smith can't do it better.
The last thing we want is to fork cash over to Collins, extended his contract and then find that he doesn't fit the system as well as some of the other
guys on the roster. Then we get stuck with the Bears Cedric Benson experience, where we play the guy just cause we paid him so much. So I just think we wait to
see if Collins fits the scheme if he does, than I think he deserves the paycheck
Jennings on the other hand is on a different boat. The offense isn't going to change and we already know that he is a big time player. TT can redo his contract because Jennings has already been successful in the system.

The JS with the details:
http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/49214732.html Basically, 3 years longer, with 26.35 million in new money, 16.25 million in guaranteed money. Mark Tauscher, MVP of the World. |

So we added 3 years onto next year, right? Meaning we have him for 4 more years?
Edit: nevermind, I decided to read the article. I like this deal a lot. Lots of the cap hit is this year, lots of incentives added.

The whole Collins affair makes me angry, while in the case of Jennings I think we sorta over-paid by a bit, but it was a signing that we had to do. Agree that
Collins has to show that he can truly QB this new D, and if he and his agent don't grasp that, all while he's making $3 mil+, then I hope, in a
perverse way, that he breaks his female organs this fall. Just kidding, but his approach is just plain stupid!
People the world over have always been more impressed by the power of our example than by the example of our power.

If he can't grasp that what makes them think the Packers would believe he can grasp the new system well enough to make him worth an extension. Especially considering it took him three years to figure out the last defense. Maybe he just doesn't have a great football IQ. |
